On this program we look at the extraordinary career of Chuck Close, an artist who, for thirty years, has had a passionate interest in making portraits of his friends and family. Working from photographs, Close has made an astonishing body of work. Using a multiplicity of innovative styles and techniques, he has revolutionized the time honored portrait. Included are interviews with fellow artists Janet Fish, April Gornik and Kent Floeter as well as critic/curator Klaus Kertess who talk about the experience of “sitting” for a Chuck Close portrait.

ART/new york has followed Chuck’s work for many years and this program includes two recent exhibitons at the Pace/Wildenstein Gallery in SoHo. Additionally, we visit Close in his downtown studio where he demonstrates his painting method and discusses his artistic choices. Also included are interviews with art crtici and poet John Yau, curator Klaus Kertess and Museum of Modern Art curator, Robert Storr, the organizer of the 1998 Close retrospective at MoMA. 35 min.
